Our names are Laura O’Connor, Allison Pioli, and Angelina DiSantis and we are sophomores at Boyertown Senior High School. We have been nominated as candidates for the 2020 Students of the Year campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If you are not familiar with this campaign, for seven weeks, starting on January 12th 2020, students across the country will be raising awareness for the research, programs, and advocacy being conducted through LLS, in addition to raising funds to support their mission to cure blood cancers. We got involved in this campaign because 1.2 million people are living with or in remission from leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma.

Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

We really are changing the face of blood cancer!
