Kostkas Continue's Students of the Year Fundraiser

Dec 09, 2020

Welcome to Team Kostka's Continue Katie's Quest for a Cure!

Back in April 2020, when the world was under lockdown and many people were lacking hope we, Hannah and Meghan Kostka, were presented with an opportunity to bring some positivity back into a world clouded with a shadow of negativity. Our high school algebra teacher, Ms. Tricia Brown presented us with a huge undertaking; a nomination to continue her daughter, Katie Brown’s, quest for a cure for leukemia and lymphoma through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Student of the Year Campaign.

Katie Brown, while on the surface appears to be an ordinary teenage girl, was unfortunately diagnosed with leukemia as a young girl. Her story, however, has a happy ending as she won her battle against cancer. Furthermore, she used her difficult experience to make her stronger. Last winter, she signed up for the Student of the Year Campaign, hosted by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, to raise money for the society.

The Student of the Year Campaign is an annual 7 week-long fundraising event that begins in January and ends in March. High school students from all across the state develop their own campaigns and compete against other students in their county with a goal to fundraise the most money. During the 2020 Student of the Year Campaign, Katie Brown ran a fantastic campaign with her team, Katie’s Quest for a Cure, and raised over $30,000 for the society. However, her contribution and impact within the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is not finished yet, as she sought out another team to continue her legacy and further promote the cause.

This year we will be picking up where Katie left off and lead our own campaign in 2021, The Kostkas Continue Katie’s Quest for a Cure. We both believe in supporting the mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and truly believe that our contribution and fundraising efforts will benefit our world significantly. The funds accumulated over the duration of the 7 weeks not only goes to supporting further research of blood cancer, but also supports those individuals and their families who suffer from the effects of blood cancer.

Most people do not realize how extensive the effects of blood cancer can be. There is a great chance that there is someone in your life that has been affected by blood cancer in one way or another. The two of us did not realize the effect it had on our own family either, until our mother brought to our attention during the planning of our own campaign. Her oldest sister, our Aunt Toni, passed away from leukemia before either of us were either born. My mom described her as a smart and caring individual, which is the type of person we both strive to be. As candidates for the 2021 Student of the Year campaign we are raising money for LLS this year to honor the memory of our Aunt Toni and to continue the legacy of Katie Brown.

Thank you for contributing to our campaign and helping to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!

Don't forget to like and share us on social media to help further the success of our campaign!
