Hello everyone ! My name is Sophia Lopez and I was chosen to be a student visionary representative for the 2022-2023 season. LLS, otherwise known as the Lymphoma and Leukemia society, is an organization that utilizes students’ skills to raise money for cancer treatments and resources. In LLS there are three pillars that a visionary can follow: Advocacy, Research and, Patient Support. This year I have chosen to follow the advocacy pillar as I find it fits best with me. I chose to follow advocacy because my family has experienced mistreatment in the healthcare system. When my grandpa first received his diagnosis, I felt like my world stopped. I'd never experienced such a heartbreak. What helped me the most in realizing he wasn't completely suffering was how the nurses in his facility cared for him. In his immediate care, he was treated well. Despite this, when he worsened he was sent to a hospice center where he was severely mistreated. His hygiene, visiting hours and health overall decreased since his admission. At 10 years old, i felt helpless watching him suffer. It was then I knew I wanted to advocate for those who could not do so themselves. Being chosen for LLS made me realize that speaking up is what I was meant to do. By donating, you contribute to the end of mistreatment in healthcare along with resources for cancer families that are experiencing this.
