Dear Family and Friends,

I had the privilege of being nominated as the only Arvin candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2023 Bakersfield Student Visionaries of the Year campaign. Student Visionaries of the Year is a seven-week leadership development program that runs from February 22nd to April 12th to raise money and advocate for LLS. I am writing today to ask for your support of my campaign, which I am running in honor of my cousin Mayra Fernandez. 

I have created a team of committed friends and family to partners with me on this journey. Together, we have set a fundraising goal of $50,000! Reaching $50,000 allows me to have the chance of a lifetime and name a research grant in honor of my cousin Mayra, so that her name can live on and help others battling blood cancer like she did. The money raised helps LLS, the largest nonprofit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancers, fund cuttingedge research and treatments. In fact, the treatments that LLS is funding benefit non-blood cancer patients too. More than 40% of new cancer treatment drugs approved by the FDA since 2004 started as blood cancer drugs are now being applied in other forms of cancer.

In 1949 when LLS started only 0% of children survived after being diagnosed with cancer, but now LLS has raised the survival rate to 96% for the most common type of blood cancer. Since 2017 LLS has funded 75% of blood cancer treatments that were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Everybody wins when cancer loses, so now is your time to help.
