Yamileth's Students of the Year Fundraiser
Hello everyone!
I am super excited to announce that I am a part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as a candidate for the Student of the Year Campaign. I am very blessed to be running alongside many exceptional students across the Central Valley this year. This campaign runs from February 19th, 2021 to the Grand Finale Celebration on April 9th 2021.
On March 19, 2019, my aunt was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes. We knew that breast cancer was high risk because we carry the BRCA-1 gene mutation in our family, but it was shocking to all of us because it came out of the blue. She would have to undergo chemotherapy for six months and later have surgery. Looking back at it, I realize how it affected my family and herself. It led to my family being more educated about breast cancer and being preventative in every aspect.
With the help of UC San Francisco, she has fully recovered and has been cancer-free for two years. She is one of the strongest people I know and had to endure so much. She came out stronger in the end, and I couldn’t be more proud. Although this type of cancer has the possibility of returning at any time, the research provided by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society could make future treatments more available and easy for patients.
This year, I plan to contribute and advocate for the fantastic work done by LLS and take on the battle against cancer through my campaign. Nearly everyone knows someone who is taking on the fight against cancer, but cancer research is beginning to win this battle. Thanks to LLS, there have been 65 new drugs approved by the FDA to treat cancer and 55 of those have come from LLS funded research. Although they are first approved to treat blood cancers, these drugs are now being used to treat patients specifically with breast cancer, like my aunt. With your help, we can find a cure, make cancer treatment easier for the patients, and celebrate more cancer survivors.
I would greatly appreciate your donation to my campaign to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. You can support my campaign in many ways, such as donating directly through my website or send checks payable to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to 3793 Avocet Dr. Merced, CA (95340). Be sure to write my name, Yami Alvarez, in the memo portion of the check. You could also help my campaign by spreading this information to others, you know. Thank you so much for your support!
Let’s take on this battle together!
