Mrs. Chelsea Geraci-Milliorn

Feb 14, 2018

We are dedicating our campaign to Bullard’s very own Pep & Cheer Director, Chelsea Geraci-Milliorn. In 2011, Mrs. Milliorn was diagnosed with Leukemia- Essential Thrombocythemia which is  blood condition characterised by the overproduction of platelets. A count for a healthy woman her age is between 125,000 and 400,000 and Mrs. Milliorn had about 8 million. She is now on a steady stream of daily oral chemotherapy with no pain and lives a wonderful life. However her future is uncertain.

Here is a little more about her story!

"June 2011 I was teaching at a Parole Violation Unit in Merced County that was connected to Mule Creek and Susanville prisons. I was teaching English and Social Science to adult male recidivists that wanted to change their lives.

I loved teaching there and had made some significant strides. By that time, Troy, my husband and I had been married for 12 years and our daughter, Madison was approaching her freshman year, right here at Bullard.

I have always been an active person and that summer, I was routinely finding myself, unusually fatigued but nothing that alarmed me. I also began to notice some tiny reddish spots on my torso and legs. Again, I did not think much of it, maybe an allergy to food or something right?

I was considering some cosmetic surgery and visited a plastic surgeon. Standard operating procedures call for prospective patients to get a full "CBC" or Complete Blood Count, in order for the surgeon to know, emphatically that a patient is healthy enough for surgery. I proceeded to a diagnostic center a few days later to engage in the blood draw as I had been instructed to do. Approximately, 3 days later, the surgeon himself called me at the Parole Violation Unit. I don't think my husband had ever even called me at work now that I recollect. The doctor told me to get something to write with as he had some information to give me. He began to give me the name and contact information to a colleague of his at the California Cancer Center. I took the information and then quickly inquired why I needed it. He stated to me plainly, "Chelsea, there was something detected from you CBC results. This is NOT my area of expertise. The doctor's information I gave you....he is a great doctor and a good friend. Please speak with him."

So I did. I then went to meet with my new oncologist, Dr. Tom Hackett. I liked him from the moment I met him because he is, as they say, "a straight shooter". He informed me, in no uncertain terms, I have leukemia; Essential Thrombocythemia to be exact. I make too many platelets in my blood. When I met Dr. Hackett he informed me a healthy count of platelets for a woman my age is anywhere between 125,000 and 400,000; I strangely had 8 million and was a mystery to him as to how I had not "stroked out" yet.

I have been on a steady stream of a daily oral chemotherapy since. I am told there are 5 drugs to treat me and then, "we'll have to do something else." I have currently worked my way through to drug 2. The chemo I take changes the recipe of blood production. So far, so good.

The good news is I have 0 pain and live a wonderful full life. The bad news is, my future is very uncertain...but so is everyone's if you really consider it. There are things I must think about differently. There are considerations I must make now because I am "prohibited" from certain activities. You never know how much you want to do something until you are told you are prohibited from doing so by your cancer doctor."

Welcome to our LLS Students of the Year Fundraising Page

Feb 14, 2018

Hello! This is Jake Newman, Seth Perrault, and Jazzlyn Tristan's fundrasing page for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Student of the Year campaign. We are seniors at Bullard High School and this year we are fortunate to have been chosen as nominees. In some way or another, everyone is affected by cancer and this is why we are asking for your support. The LLS mission is to find a cure for blood cancer and improve the quality of life for patients and their families with their fight against cancer. Our goal is to raise $35,000 and all money donated will go directly to the LLS foundation.

We Thank you in advcance for your support and all donations large or small. Any form of help will be beneficial, as everybody wins when cancer loses. Through your support, and the funds raised by our team and fellow candidates, we are helping LLS get one step closer to a world without cancer!

Thank you for your efforts to raise money for this cause. They have done so much for our 17 year old nephew Dustin Letson at Clovis High. He has been battling this his entire senior year in hospital studies. Hoping he will make it to walk at his high school graduation. Continue in your efforts! Chris & Wendi Holland

I encourage everyone to contribute. This wonderful trio of students represents the best of Bullard High School, showing us adults that we need to step up and sacrifice a little for one of the most caring and devoted teachers on our staff.
