Lucy's Students of the Year Fundraiser
Dear Friends and Family
My name is Lucy Crew and I am a sophomore at San Luis Obispo High School. I have been given the incredible opportunity to help a cause that is close to my heart. Throughout my life, I have always tried to take advantage of opportunities put in front of me, and today I’d like to talk to you about my most recent and most exciting one: THE CHANCE TO SAVE LIVES!
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) launches its Student of the Year fundraising campaign every year; I am honored to be a candidate for the 2021 Student of the Year campaign along with my close friend Lexi Alltucker. Our team, “The Blood Blasters,” has the goal of raising $25,000 for those receiving treatment for, or in remission of a blood cancer. The 7-week long fundraising campaign, running from March 24 - May 14, aids the mission of the LLS in its goal of discovering a cure for blood cancers, as well as assisting the patients and families that endure the tragic disease. These conditions have touched and continue to touch thousands of families every year, and I could not be more excited to be a part of the change made worldwide.
One of the many families that benefit from the support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the Cota family. Mateo Cota is a nine-year-old boy from Arroyo Grande, California. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2013, as he was nearing his 2nd birthday. After rigorous chemotherapy and monitoring in his blood work, Mateo has been in remission since October 21st, 2013. His older brother became his bone marrow donor in 2019. Mateo was able to overcome cancer with encouragement from friends, family, the medical community, and the efforts of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Amid the Covid-19 global pandemic, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society needs your help more than ever. Blood cancers continue to affect people during the pandemic and render those struggling with the disease highly susceptible to severe complications if they contract the virus. Our desire in taking part in this campaign is to raise awareness and help others like Mateo.
