Dear Family and friends,

My name is Gracyn Weaver, I am 16 years old and I was nominated for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society student of the year in the Central California Chapter. It is an honor to be able to participate in the Student of the Year fundraising campaign alongside other students around Kern County. My team and I will be raising money from January 9th - February 22nd. Our goal is to raise $20,000 which will go directly to LLS to achieve the goal of a world without blood cancer. This is an organization that is making and impact with the dollars it raises, and I am very proud to be associated with LLS.

The main reason why I joined the fight against blood cancer is because I unfortunately have 3 family members with cancer. Two of them recently passed due to cancer. My Great Grandpa had Sarcoma, which is a tumor that occurs in the bones and soft tissues. My cousin had Follicular Lymphoma, which is when the sick blood cells can travel to many parts of your body. My Great Grandma is still currently fighting B cell Lymphoma, which attacks B cells. Like many of you, I have witnessed firsthand the effect of those who suffer from blood cancer and their loved ones.

There are many reasons to be proud to support LLS’s efforts. 31 of the 37 new FDA approved cancer drugs were funded by LLS.  Many of the LLS-supported therapies not only help in the treatment of blood cancers but with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. They are also being tested in clinical trials for lung, brain, breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers, and non-cancerous diseases such as diabetes and lupus.
