Dear Friends and Family,

This is William Huang, a junior from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.

9 years ago, my best friend’s mom, April, was diagnosed with breast cancer.​ Throughout our childhood, she had a great impact on our lives, inviting us to amusement parks and hosting a going-away party when we moved away even while she was battling the late stages of her cancer. She bravely went through many rounds of chemotherapy. Sadly, she passed 3 years after her diagnosis. This loss weighed heavily on our family as we lost an inspiring, strong-spirited, and caring friend. 

I am very excited to announce that I have been nominated as a candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Students of the Year campaign, along with my co-candidates Andrew Chi and Madeline Li. From Thursday January 27th to March 18th, we will be competing against other candidate teams from the Greater Los Angeles area to fundraise the most money. Our team, TEAM BETTER TOGETHER, have great hope for this cause. I have been working towards this day for many months now - leading team meetings, making corporate sponsorship pitches with companies, and learning about the amazing work LLS is doing. Together, with your help and support, we are hoping to reach our fundraising goal of $20,000 to raise funds for this great organization on our journey to help find a cure for cancer. 

 LLS is the largest nonprofit dedicated to changing the world by eliminating blood cancers. Since 1949, they have provided nearly $1.3 billion in breakthrough cancer research. In the last decade, over 40% of the cancer treatments and drugs come from LLS funded research, which is not only being used to treat blood cancer patients, but also those affected by other diseases, such as breast cancers, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease to name a few.

1. Donate a silent auction item: we would love to hear from you or someone you know who would be willing to donate goods or services to be auctioned for our Grand Finale on Friday, March 18th, or other possible fundraising opportunities and sponsorships.
