I am extremely honored to be nominated for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Students of the Year 2020 representing the third year legacy team of Al’s Angels. I attended St. Bernadine School and currently I’m a junior at Chaminade High School.

Three years ago, my best friend, Camille, lost her dad to leukemia.  I grew up with her family, her dad coached me in sports, we went to Father Daughter dances and other family events together, so this loss hit me hard.  Al, her dad, was diagnosed in 2011 and spent 5 years fighting.  Unfortunately, the side effects of treatment caused him to succumb to his disease on March 10, 2016 leaving behind his wife, 3 sons and my best friend, his only daughter.   My family has also been touched by this terrible disease. My grandmother, the eldest of 5 children, lost her younger sister, Marguerite, just a few days after her 21^st birthday from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  Many years later, Marguerite’s niece was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in her early 20’s. Luckily, thanks to advancements in science, she is now cancer free and is living a full life and is married with 2 children.  These experiences have taught me to appreciate life, my family and friends. LLS is currently funding research for newer and better treatments. That’s why I am writing to you today, I need your help.  I have seen first-hand how cancer affects families, and I don’t want to see another family go through such a loss.      

I have set a goal for Al’s Angels to raise $100,000. An amount that I am sure would make Al Jacobellis and Marguerite Campbell very proud.  Every dollar that we raise between January 16th - March 6^th will count as one vote toward my campaign. This LLS campaign is critical to keep the advancement of research moving forward. These efforts have resulted in 42 new treatments since 2017, continued patient support, education and advocacy at the state, local, and federal level. Everyone I know has been affected by cancer in some way. This campaign is to honor those who have passed and for those that battle today.
