About Elise: I'm currently a senior at Xavier College Preparatory and I hope to attend college in DC and pursue a career as a politician and policymaker. I’ve been Captain of the Brophy Speech and Debate team since the beginning of my sophomore year, and I've written speeches on topics ranging from the U.S. Intelligence System to the importance of teamwork to the significance of intellectual humility. 

After months of research last season, I also wrote and performed a speech on gender bias in design (excerpt linked here), which informed me of the clear gap in research on how medication and medical procedures affect women. In its pursuit of curing blood cancer, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) continues to create the necessary groundwork to eventually close the gender gap in medical design. 

 

This year, I’m proud to be a part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign, working to raise as much as possible for LLS’s mission of curing blood cancer. 

 

As a global leader in the fight against blood cancer, LLS works to fulfill its mission in three main ways: 

          1. Funding cutting-edge research in immunotherapy, genomics and personalized medicine.

          2. Providing free, personalized education and support for cancer patients and their loved ones

          3. Advocating for policy changes that will make cancer treatments and support affordable and accessible to all. 

Given that approximately one person dies from blood cancer every nine minutes in the United States alone ¹, we can't waste any more time. 

We need to act NOW.
