Larry Wooten, 72, lost his 14 year fight to Leukemia on February 23, 2016 at UAB hospital. Larry graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1961. He served in the Army National Guard Reserve for over 7 years. He attended Livingston State College and graduated from Samford University where he was an active member of Pi Kappa Phi. Larry later received several more degrees from Jefferson State College. Larry was in the engineering field at Rust Engineering and was presently working at Khafra Engineering. Larry’s passion for music led him to be a member of the Magic City Blues Society, the Magic City Boppers, and the Birmingham Record Club. In his young adult life, Larry was active in Jaycees and the Sertoma Club. Larry’s coaching football at Huffman Ball Park, as well as his teaching Sunday School at Huffman Baptist Church, was a testament to his love and commitment not only to his children but also to others. Larry exemplified what it means to be a godly, faithful and committed husband, father and family man. He is survived by his parents, Major L. Wooten, 99, and Jewell Cox Wooten; uncle, William Wooten; brother, Ronald (Marylee); his wife of 48 years, Judy Davis Wooten, and daughters: Cindy Brophy (E.J.), Jenny Ryder (Sean) and Holly McDonald (Dell); 1 grandson, 5 granddaughters, 2 step grandchildren, and 1 step great granddaughter and a host of other relatives and friends. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at UAB who cared for Larry with respect and dignity. Family will receive friends on Monday, February 29, 2016 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home with a “Celebration of His Life” at 2:00 p.m. Burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
