Welcome to the Lake Hiawatha

Laps for Leukemia Event

Make a SPLASH in the fight against blood cancer.

On Friday, July 15th the members of Lake Hiawatha will be swimming for a cure! The event will be held location TBA! This is the first time Lake Hiawatha will be swimming laps in the fight against blood cancer!

Swim for a Cure is an event where swimmers are encouraged to ask friends and family to either make a pledge per lap they swim or a flat donation in honor of local NJ patients battling blood cancer. An ice cream party is awarded to teams that raise $600!  All funds raised will directly benefit New Jersey Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and are tax deductible.

Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers.  They are even being tested in clinical trials for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers.

On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere we thank you for your support! For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org.

Meet our Honored Hero, Santino from Kinnelon, NJ!

In March 2014, Santino’s family noticed him limping- he said his knee hurt but he didn't need any medicine.  A week later he went to his pediatrician. His blood work was due at that time as well. Several days later his results came in and didn’t look good, so his doctor requested a repeat test. The repeat test results were just as bad so he urged Santino’s parents to take him to The Valerie Fund oncology group. Once they made that appointment, life as they knew it was over. The oncologist obtained Santino's blood work results from the pediatrician’s office. They knew Santino had Leukemia and he and his family learned it was ALL, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Treatment for him was pure torture the first year. The second year of treatment thankfully flew by. Santino himself has a lot of fear as to having a relapse, but as he is getting older and older seems to be handling it better. He has another 18 months in treatment and his family maintains a positive attitude for a healthy future. Santino loves landscaping and football and is a very sweet and mature young boy!
