Twelve years ago, when I was three years old, my mom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Without treatment she would have had just months to live. Thankfully there were new treatments available to her. A drug called Gleevec got her into remission and she had a successful bone marrow transplant. Today she is cancer free.

Starting January 8th until February 28th, I am launching an effort to try to give something back and make sure others who are facing cancer have new treatments and cures as well. For the next seven weeks, I will compete in the Student of the Year campaign against other students from around Minnesota to see who can raise the most money for cancer research.

This is a cause that is close to my heart. I am so grateful for the many ways LLS has helped my mom and my family. I also know not all families are as lucky as mine. That is what drives me to participate in Student of the Year.

I know how impactful LLS is and how important their funding has been in finding new treatments for all types of cancer. In fact, research funded by LLS has found treatments that have been effective for many different cancers and diseases, not just blood cancers.  

My goal is to raise 50,000 dollars, a ambitious goal, but one that is achievable with your help. If I succeed in raising $50,000, I will have the opportunity to name a research grant for my mom. I am so proud and grateful for her strength, unwavering kindness, and her love, qualities she has demonstrated all her life. I would be so grateful if you, as well as your friends and family, would help me reach this lofty but important goal.

No one plans on having their life or the life of someone they know affected by cancer, but it is important that organizations like LLS are able to fund research for cancer treatments and cures so the effects of cancer are far less destructive.

I am so proud of my Mom and how hard she fought to get healthy. I also know fighting hard doesn’t guarantee anything. We need new, better treatments to make sure everyone is able to beat cancer.
