Welcome to Alexandra Hayes' SOY Fundraising Page!

Feb 13, 2018
Almost five years ago at the age of 16, my life was forever changed when I was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). I immediately began aggressive chemotherapy treatments, spent 97 days in the hospital and achieved remission where I thankfully remain today. I know that without the help of friends like you, who donate funds to organizations like LLS, I would not be here today. The day after my admission to the hospital, I met Glenn Markway a 21 year old college student who received the same diagnosis of AML. Glenn and I endured the same treatments, yet Glenn experienced relapse and was forced to undergo a stem cell transplant. Sadly, Glenn passed away on August 1, 2015, just two years after our initial diagnosis. Glenn’s Mother, Carol Markway, has nominated me to carry on the fundraising campaign for LLS in 2018. I have committed to this campaign to ensure that there will be a cure, not someday, but today. LLS is doing its part in this search for a cure by funding promising research and helping patients and families through financial aid, education and support groups. This is an organization that is doing the right things with the dollars it raises, and I am proud to be associated with it. Please join me and my team #AllinforGlenn in not only raising money for LLS but honoring the memory of my dear friend Glenn. I am honored to have been accepted as a candidate in the 2018 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am raising critical dollars in honor of a young patient hero who is currently battling or is in remission from a blood cancer. Each dollar is a vote. The candidate team who raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student of the Year. My mission is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens. We really are changing the face of blood cancer! All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS-funded research but will help provide critical information and support for patients, and support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need. Please visit our website often and bring friends who would also like to donate! On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere I thank you for your support!

Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

Ali, you are a courageous young lady and we wanted to let you know we support you and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This disease touches so many lives. Around the same time you were sick, my mom & nephew both had lymphoma. They thankfully survived as well but many don't. We need more research so a cure for all can be found.
