Welcome To My Students of the Year Fundraising Page!

Please join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my Students of the Year fundraising campaign. Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund the therapies and treatments and help save lives today.

My family's cancer story began when I was two years old. My mom became very ill, and the doctors had a difficult time finding a diagnosis. Her symptoms were much like those of appendicitis; however, her sickness would be more than a ruptured appendix. In April of 2002, she was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer called Adenocarcinoma of the appendix. Approximately 600 to 1,000 Americans are diagnosed with it each year. Because this cancer is so rare, there is very little research that has been done and treatment options are minimal. Her odds did not look promising as she was given a 2% chance of living more than five years. This wasn't going to stop her from fighting though!

There were many hospital visits, most of which turned into hospital stays. Her calender filled up with doctor's appointments, yet she continued to not let her illness keep her from doing the best she could to provide a normal home and family life for me as a young child. We traveled to New York City and Washington, D.C., where she underwent surgeries and treatment by the best doctors in the country. She fought a long and hard battle, but was granted with eternal healing in Heaven on November 18th, 2007, after beating the odds by six months.

My mom was sick for a majority of the seven years I had with her. She experienced unimaginable pain, and as I learn more about her and her illness, I can't help but to feel proud to honor her with this campaign. I am running for the 2018 Student of the Year because I am passionate about ensuring that one day, no person will ever have to go through cancer, no matter what kind. She has inspired me to not only continue to fight for her, but to fight also for every cancer affected patient and family. My mom's story has not only given me a purpose in life but also an indescribable passion and determination to help other families. No person should have to hear the words that they have cancer, whether it be blood, breast, skin or any kind of cancer. As a first hand witness, no person should ever have to watch someone battle cancer either.

With the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, we can make someday today. You and I have the opportunity to change the lives of patients and their families. Blood cancer research is paving the way for treatments for other cancer. In fact, 40% of FDA approved cancer treatments started as blood cancer treatments, most of which were funded by the LLS. These treatments are now being used to treat other cancers. Some are even being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. LLS funded drugs are also being tested for patients with other non-cancerous diseases like Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis.

We really are changing the face of cancer!

I hope you will consider joining me in making a difference in the cancer community. Every dollar counts! All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS research but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.

Thank you for making Someday Today and helping me to #BetheChange!

Please visit my website often and bring friends who would also like to donate! I am also excited to announce that the Savannah Students of the Year Grand Finale will take place on March 23, 2018.

Your story, Taylor, sounds very similar to mine. When my mother died at age 41 of cancer my reflexive desire was to launch a career in pursuit of a cure. While I did have the opportunity to do 2 years of "bench research" between college and medical school, the people who really impacted me were the physicians who spent time with her and her family during her battle. That is why I decided to become a physician. And God gives me the opportunity everyday to witness to people in their time of need, to offer encouragement and to share in celebrations. Best wishes and may God continue to you and others through you!

We just can't wish cancer would go away, we have to do something about it. Uncle Jeff and I are proud of you for being brave and determined enough "to do something about it." Many young adults think and dream big, but never do anything about those dreams. So pleased to see you taking actions to make your dreams come true. Stay focused, stay determined, stay close to God and you will aid in ridding cancer of this world!

Taylor I am French and I found your fundraise page totally by chance while looking on the internet for a wonderful person I met back in 1982 during a six months internship in the US. I was moved by your story and your determination to change things. So, good luck from France !

I have very fond memories of your beautiful mother and always loved seeing her when she came to visit in Jacksonville. You are such an admiration and I know she is very proud of you as she looks down from heaven.

  • Greg Hammerstein

Taylor, your Uncle Greg and Aunt Heidi have watched you grow up from a baby to the beautiful young woman you are today and we are so very proud of you. I was there with your Dad that day when he told you your Mom was going to go to heaven and in my heart I can still vividly hear your tiny, trembling voice responding to your Dad, telling him that you wanted your Mom to stay with you. I often wondered if that moment in time has stayed with you in your heart as it has in mine. Its a painful part of life to lose someone you love and who loves you and most everyone suffers this pain in some way in the course of a life-time. Its one of those facts of life that makes you ask "why does it have to be this way?" Your continued, ongoing pledge to use your personal experience to help others who will face this same life challenge and sorrow is admirable and indicative of the same strength of character your Mom had. Your Mom was a strong and intelligent woman and you are a reflection of her.
